I've walked through parts of the Bronx and lots of NYC, and it's always been fine even in areas that felt sketchy. BUT I've been to legitimate ghettos where being there past 5pm, especially if you are white, is so bad that locals usher you out frantically. One such time was while doing volunteer work and we'd be advised to leave by 4:15pm. Another such time I was lost and trying to follow my phone GPS (back before they became much more accurate and easy to follow). A sympathetic, older black man who was walking up to his home with groceries saw me and was very concerned. My gut told me he was being genuine, and thank god he was. He was extremely worried for me and told me to never walk through that area again, he walked me all the way back to where I should have been and took off. He didn't even drop his groceries inside his home before he walked me back. he was legitimately terrified for me.
