Considering it was a part of Romania until the USSR came along in 1940 i'm surprised that it didn't rejoin Romania when the USSR collapsed in 1991. The population is 75% Moldovan but before that the Moldovans were simply counted as Romanians.

Forgive me if im wrong, just never understood why they stayed seperate when it was the USSR that seperated them in the first place.
