I had to do a fresh install of Windows 10

Can any of you suggest some software (browsers, antivirus or etc) I should install so it doesn't happen again. It was a very stressful weekend

Just don't download anything shady. malwarebytes + windows defender is pretty decent imo. Also Brave is a nice browser

This. I remember when i used my old laptop. I did some flash animations and got paid for doing it (i did some flash animations for some guys) and then a virus fucked up my laptop so i had to restore the PC. After the restore i lost 80 hours of fucking doing nothing but fucking doing those animations. So i installed Bonzi Buddy and bonzi defended me from many viruses and i also got VPN with it. It had fucking VPN back in 2011 in a anti-virus. And i got ALL MY ANIMATIONS BACK!

okay OP, here's what you can do if you must use windows.

firstly, use a browser that has a sound and secure web engine, such as a variant of chrome that is up to date.

keep your browser up to date, keep ANYTHING that connects to the internet up to date

install an ad blocker, you can use ublock origin

don't go anywhere without it, your biggest attack surface is your web browser, outside that.. common fucking sense.

if you are feeling autistic you can use a noscript/scriptsafe plugin, will need to build a whitelist for them over time, though. but that would really be the best thing to do
