You can do it as often as you lucid dream, which will depend on how much you make your habits suitable to lucid dreaming. This means maintaining a dream journal, writing down all or most of your dreams in good detail every morning (this is the hardest part of the practice, and is the most important part). You should also do reality checks, meaning that you do something to verify you are or are not dreaming, by doing something simple and discrete like counting your fingers to see you have only 10 or squeezing your nose shut to see if you can breath through. Do this every hour or so, and when you do it really ask yourself if you are dreaming or not, whether or not you are. This is basically all you need to get consistent lucid dreams. Meditation helps but is by no means required.
Some tips for when you are actually in the dream:
>when you first become lucid, rub your hands together; this stabilizes the dream by stimulating your dream sense of touch. do this whenever the dream begins to fade (or spin in place)>don't try to spawn people or objects right in front of you out of thin air, it probably won't work. Instead imagine they are behind you or some wall out of sight, then look behind yourself/the wall and you will find them>don't stare at one spot too long, you will wake up
