I'm trying Ubuntu for the first time, is LVM encryption worth it?
My dad gave me his old laptop that he doesn't use anymore since he has a decent tablet now.

There's really no reason not to encrypt everything. It is technically slower, but you won't notice it. Gives me peace of mind knowing that if someone were to get ahold of my laptop they wouldn't be able to learn about all the weird anime songs I listen to on YouTube.

No, it's not. Linux is the only part of the operating system that runs in kernel space. GNU software is application software. Linux alone constitutes an operating system.

Also avoid distrohopping. It's a very common trap the Linux noobs fall into. It's a waste of time. Pretty much anything you want to do can be done on any distro. If you wanted you could make a rule for yourself like "I will not switch distros more than once a month." It really is a waste of time but it's very easy to get sucked into. A much better use of time is learning how to use the OS. If you want to "rice" your desktop there is a wide arrangement of desktop environments and window managers to choose from, and (for the most part) they are available on any distribution. Don't be afraid of the command line. And if it's something you're interested in, Linux makes it very easy to tinker with your system and learn about how it works.
