I'll put it to you this way, the Norse pagans, they believed that if you died valiantly in battle, you would be honored by Odin and enter into Valhalla. Did it matter whether or not it was true? No. The vikings pillaged, raided, fought hard, and made themselves into a strong, powerful people who are now UNAFRAID of death and combat. What happens when you have a whole country unafraid of death and combat? Likewise, with Christianity, the fruits it produces are a strong morality and productive capacity. This helps tie together large scale civilization and and works. Jesus himself was a carpenter, a builder, and now you have a nation of productive people.

Having no religion is just a power vacuum, waiting for other dominant religions to fight over who gets to convert them. No different than war. By having no religion, you just disarm yourself.
