Wear gear, all of it, and fucking strap your helmet/boots/gloves/etc., don't just slide it on, that shit will come off immediately in an accident without being cinched. Also pick stuff that's visible preferably with either hi-viz accents and/or reflective accents. Blacked out gear is a good way to get hit when you're mistaken for a shadow until it's too late.
Ride only during the day and not when it's wet, snowy, foggy, etc.
Stick to less traffic'd roads where it's less likely someone will clip you when they try to change lanes suddenly for no reason to hypothetically save .2 seconds off their drive.
Try to ride at "off" times when people aren't in a rush or tired/pissed off coming back from work. I recommend early morning on Saturdays or Sundays.
Always expect everything else on the road to be a fucking idiot and trust no one. That car next to you? Can change lanes into you at any time. That car in front of you? Expect them to slam on the brakes. That car coming up behind you at a light? They might not see you, be ready to take off if they don't brake in time.
Also never trust the pavement, it can be slick or have debris in the road at any time. Also watch for deer in rural areas, those fuckers love jumping in front of everything. See a deer, slow down, you never know when they'll dart and when there is more of them.
Don't go faster than your line of sight and especially be careful when there are turn ons and offs where a car could pull out.
It gets frustrating of what a big responsibility it is to ride a motorcycle safely, but it's still fun to do. Track riding is cool, but it's still pretty dangerous and even good riders do get severe injuries from time to time.
