The chinese write sounds in syllables without an actual alphabet.

They have three separate scripts: Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji.
Hiragana and Katakana are basically the same, as far as I understand. They both represent basically the same sounds, but in two different ways.
Kanji are logographs; each one represents a different concept, and from what I understand there is frequently more than one way to pronounce one symbol. Fluency in Japanese typically requires you to know at least a couple thousand Kanji

On the subject of kanji, there are a lot of them, but if you use a flashcard deck with 2000 kanji in it, and have the flashcard program (Anki in my case, to anyone interested in Anki look through the website I linked earlier) give you 15 new cards a day, then it takes you like 4 months, so not that bad
Plus you learn kanji through the vocab card deck too (which is essential to anyone taking it seriously) so it's a positive cycle
More kanji = more words, more words = more kanji (oversimplified but I'm sure you get the point)

Oh yes, I do use Anki. I'm already learning a language, Classical Latin in my case, and I use Anki for that.
I've heard that studying two languages simultaneously is extremely counter-productive if not impossible, so I'll stick to what I'm doing now. Japanese is just one of the languages I wish I knew; in the list are also Greek, Italian and sometimes I think about Irish too

Yes.
There are many, many videos and explanations on why Latin is still worthwhile even if it isn't spoken as a first language anymore. I am tired and I really don't feel like explaining it to you, but if you take a few minutes to look for any of them you'll find very good arguments.
And rest assured Latin is not dead, there are tons of people who still study it for fun.
But even if you don't take any of that into account, I fucking felt like it so I started doing it. Do you have a problem with what I do with my time?

I don't know how passionate you are about languages, but if you really want to go for it, it doesn't seem like a bad idea
If you can handle your current study rate pretty well, consider Japanese

Ah, sadly there's the problem. I do this more as a hobby, so my study rates are very irregular. I barely keep up with one language plus all the other things I have to do, two would be impossible.
But if you say Japanese is not as difficult as it may appear prima facie, it's worth trying once I have more free time.
