So whats the big deal about trades anyways.
Plumbers, electricians, hvac, whatever.
Ive been watching websites salaries and they say they earn like 40k-50k a year.

I'm going to trade school to be an electrician and shit's fucking magic. Also, much more complex than people would imagine. I live in a big city and the opportunities are plentiful. Can easily make 80k even 100-200k if you really want.

We paid 50k to get a guy to repair our buildings HVAC system within 12 hours of it going down.

Sure you can make good money running your own welding truck, but you're going to need serious liability insurance, live on the road 24/7, and be damn good at pipe welding. Welding is one of those things that some people just aren't good at, takes natural talent. Unlike plumbing/electrical/HVAC where you can teach any non-retard to do it.

For example, I am a 4th year electrical apprentice making $25/hr in Massachusetts but the same job in South Carolina would probably only pay $15/hr if you are lucky. The national average should mean literally nothing to you.

Don’t let average salaries scare you off. If you’re good at a trade you’ll make bank. One of my friends is a linesman in Tennessee. He’s smarter than your average joe so he quickly became a team leader (I don’t know what his actual title is, but he’s in charge of projects but still works in the field). He pulled in over 200K last year.

Technology has played a huge role, too. For instance, plumbing isn't nearly as challenging as it used to be. Now pretty much everything is run in pex and pvc. Not much copper work outside of commercial/industrial boilers and the only time you'll touch black pipe is for gas jobs.

The cost of running your own business is insane though.

My dad did it for the last 10 years of his working career, and he said it was a mistake.

Yeah he went from $80k to $200k working for himself instead of a company, but the company was paying for all the insurances, licenses, supplies, costs, car maintenance/gas, pensions, and had to pay more taxes, etc.

In the end the 200k gross my dad earned working for himself, after you take all the extra costs of running his own business, he wasn't walking away with that much more on 200k than he was on 80k at a company.

Not to mention the company came with tons of benefits, which he didnt get running his own business name.

co-pilot on a gulfstream, falcon, etc. makes like $95k average. those companies will let you live wherever you want and will pay your airfare when you have to work, which usually ends up being like 10 days out of the month.

Its almost as if they dont want small businesses to succeed, because its the companies like Carrier (who he worked for) who got all the benefits from the government.

His $80k Carrier income came with a ton of added benefits, that his $200k self-employed small business did not.

He said working for Carrier was 100x less stressful and that if he knew how bad the government fucks with you for running a small business, and how there are so many hidden costs of running your own business, that he would have never done it, and just stayed at Carrier.

Much the same in the US. I discovered what your did discovered .. the additional headache of having to constantly drum up new business and hire people to handle all admin work (book keeping, tax compliance, insurance, benefits, etc) simply wasn't worth it. It seems that there are only really two ways to make money the self-employed route - go BIG, I'm talking $10m+ in revenue or just keep it a sole proprietor solo endeavor. The nether region between those two will kill you.

Come to Maui, Hawaii (so long as you can tolerate the deep blue) if you want to make bank in the trades. Base rates in the hundreds per hour for licensed techs (appliance, plumbing, electric, hvac, etc.). Tons of rental properties that need maintenance and service. State laws restricting handymen. Makes for good trades profit and no winters.

It depends a lot on the state you're in and if you specialize. My dad retired last year he was a commercial electrician supervisor who specialized in fiber optics in Chicago and he was making 175k a year. If you're Billy Joe working a basic electrician job out in bumfuck nowhere youre gonna make way less.

This. I’m a fire alarm technician in A north east city. Testing and maintenance is required by law. The real money comes when you get extra licenses that work with your trade. I’m also working to get my sprinkler license( killer money) and then maybe my Hvac, which has to do with smoke control.
