>>11333874well another fun fact is that if they actually can get their hands on development materials then they can be sued for copyright infringement or whatever. the court precedent or whatever is that emulation is perfectly legal so long as it's developed completely independent of the original console.
either way yeah it's not realistic to develop an emulator without testing it on games of course, but there's a really different development process trying to replicate the hardware compared to troubleshooting a specific game.
of course if you are only worried about one game it's infinitely faster to take the latter approach which is why they made so much progress so fast, especially since they had been taking the former approach until botw came out. they hadn't gotten super far but the ground work of getting most games into a launchable state was already taken care of
