Compilers bootstrap themselves. They come in stages for this.
Starts with a small binary blob or program written in another language (usually C) that can set up a minimum environment to build an old or cut down version of the the compiler itself, just enough to compile the one you want. Updates can then be built by the version you already have installed to bypass the slow bootstrap process.

Most general purpose native language compilers (GCC, Clang/LLVM, rustc, SBCL, GHC) are self-hosting. Usually its interpreters that aren't (CPython etc.) or compilers for JIT compiled languages unsuitable for writing a compiler in (like JavaScript)

Bootstrapping SBCL is a horrible experience, since you need another ANSI Lisp to compile it.
Gentoo for example downloads a pre-compiled binary, builds your SBCL then removes the binary copy, even if you already have another Lisp on your system.
