>>11369731Madrid, Spain. I know, it's surprising, you don't tend to think of Spain as a modern country but their metro system is unreal. The only downside of the Madrid metro is that it doesn't run 24 hours, at least it didn't back in 2012. It would shut down from like 1:30am to 6am. Of course though this just fueled the nightlife in Madrid, people would go out at like 1230 or 1am, get fucked up, and stay out until the train's started running again. Very lovely and low crime aside from pickpockets.
But the trains and stations themselves were marvelous. Very modern trains, automated and easy to use ticketing service. Extremely clean. Trains were always on time, never late.
Everywhere else I went in Europe, which admittedly was not a whole lot of places, had way worse transit. Paris was an absolute joke, it felt like a 3rd world country. You'd be on the metro in Paris, and not only is it mostly niggers and sandniggers, the trains themselves are old and rickety. Instead of the train doors automatically opening on the the train cars at a station, the passengers actually have to press a button or pull a lever to open them. There's no control of it though, people would often open the doors before the train stopped moving so they could exit faster, absolutely maddening and dangerous. India-tier.
Barcelona also had a much worse metro system than Madrid. It was better than Paris, and a catalonian actually got mad at me because I had my feet up on the seat at one point, so at least they care about etiquette, but the trains themselves were old and very slow compared to Madrid. I was really surprised desu because in all other respects Barcelona seems more cultured and more modern than Madrid. Yet, Spain's capitol city has one of the best subway systems in the world.
Lisbon, Portugal's system was laughable but they had streetcars or cablecars like in San Francisco and they were beautiful so they get points for that.
