If you are playing rock go find old BB King tunes or vids. He gets a ton of milage from simple playing. A few notes played right can do more than machine gun shredding. Deadly serious here. Angus Young is BB King sped up.
Learn the lead "tricks"... vibrato is king. Vibrato, bends, slides, hammer ons and pull offs are the most used of the basics.
Practice. Repeat. Vibrato one at a time on every string with every finger one at a time. etc.
