Many years ago I spoke to a quintessentially British gentleman who went to Qur'anic school in Mauritania to learn Arabic and Islam. It was a camp in the middle of nowhere with no running water and he was sick most of the time. Apparently Mauritanian Islamic clerics and teachers have a good reputation and some of them memorize whole books. That's what I remember. I asked him if he'd like to live in Mauritania. He laughed. So that would be a no.
