I think the stealth bumps are a symptom of the Cirnoposters' late /qa/ days where such measures had to be made to simply keep their thread afloat amidst a war between /jp/+/[s4s]/ and /mlpol/+/r9k/, a habit that hasn't really died because you never know when KoG is going to report a get or a programmer has made a new game or an artist has made OC, so you always want to keep at least one thread alive 24/7, and you want to minimize image posting because that 150 image limit can go by really fast if you don't know what you're doing and deprive artists from posting their OC. A thread dead on /bant/ especially means all the content is unlinkable without the archive which makes it inconvenient to retrieve (especially gets), only furthering the bumper mentality.
But that's my take on it.
