They have more than "some genes" in common, as they shared a greater degree of common genes with each other than any other group. Racial boundaries have to be drawn somewhere, though you can break those up into sub-racial categories if you wish. "Race" is a very broad term, and if you are uncomfortable with that for some reason, then "ethnicity" is more specific.
As for "virtually nothing else in common", well, "race" is a term defined by genetics, so they needn't have anything else in common besides genes to be of the same race, but regardless of this, you're ignoring the huge amount of shared history, language, religion, culture etc as well.
What you are doing is looking at dark green and light green and saying: "but they're different, is it really fair to call them both green?"
