>>11598252i haven't really decided yet to be honest. almost assuredly some combination of gaming, anime, and studying. what about you?
>>11598263yeah. what's way worse to me is when people decide to prioritize tone/intent over semantics then impose their own intent over the speaker's. this is particularly rampant with fan subs or smaller projects.
i get that you'll rarely be able to match both tone and semantics perfectly and it's a sort of sliding scale for how much you want to sacrifice of one or the other but i swear to god i've seen cases where people just ignore what the person said entirely
>yeah well it was sassy teasing and it'd be a bit awkward to translate so i'll just drop a sick burn in it's place and viewers will get the ideamight be that your perception is warped, it's hard to say for sure. it can definitely be translated as big sis in some cases, but since unnie is a catchall honorific for a woman that's older than the woman speaking it has really wide usage
if a girl is talking to her roommate and says
>unnie do you want to go to the party latertranslating it as big sis is perfectly fine.
if a girl is meeting her workplace superior and says
>nice to meet you, unnie. i look forward to working with youtranslating it as big sis makes it sound like she thinks their best friends or something when it's specifically being used to be polite.
so there's no universal way to translate it and trying to use the same word in every case is both super lazy and straight up inaccurate
