Gnosticism proposes that your pathway to enlightenment and salvation is through yourself. You are but a part of God, and having the knowledge (or gnosis) of this fact can let you escape from the sins of the world. It is a philosophy of individualism, and individualism does not jive well with a Roman Empire that is trying to spread Christianity as a form of control over a great many of different races and cultures.
