I've always wondered, how does high school work in the U.S? I know you guys pick courses, but do you not pick a program as well? Or is it like a mix between the two?

I was just before the age of common core.
we had kindergarten, elementary 1-4 yrs, middle school 4-8 high school 9-12.
basic english/math/science/phys ed/workshop/computer science(bcos it was still new.)
(started school in the late 90's.)
I have no idea what they do to the kids there now.

I see. I tried reading up about the common core but it seemed very loosely defined.
In Sweden (and the other Scandinavian countries IIRC) you chose an entire program for HS, for example, I chose the "Vehicles" program, where you can then specialize into stuff like:
>different types of mechanic (heavy vehicles, regular cars, small vehicles)
>transport (get a truckers license or licenses for other types of transport vehicles)
or you could pick a program that essentially prepares you for further studies (uni), like:
>economics
>society (with several different specialization, like psychologi, media, etc.)
>"nature" (this is essentially just really advanced math and stuff like chemistry)
is it anything like this in freedomland?

autistic questions are always welcome, high school credits are kind of funny. you needed like, 12 to pass and they were in foreign language, science/chemistry, design/fabrication, building/archetecture, economics/finance or learning from the nearby vocational/technical school.
you basically had to choose 3.
I sucked at french so I took graphic design/advertising instead.

That sounds like a strange way to do it, but then again, we're from different cultures, and I'm sure our stuff sounds weird to you as well.
From what you're telling me, it sounds more like you get to make a "custom program" but it's just not as specialized as here?
I assume you can't really become something like a mechanic just through HS, you need further education afterwards, or you pick a vocational school? (I might be misremembering what vocational means)
This is very interesting, I always enjoy learning about these smaller details in other places/cultures, really appreciate it.

I can imagine it has only gotten worse, especially when the system (to me) seems very ill-defined and "loose", as opposed to here where you choose your program and then you spend the 1st year essentially repeating 9th grade and getting some info about the different specializations available, and then 2nd and 3rd year you almost exclusively focus on program specific subjects (I can't tell you how many times I have had to read about exhaust regulations and how tire pressure affects your handling and mileage).

Anyway, thanks for indulging my autistic curiousity. All the knowledge I have of US high school are from like 80's and 90's movies about how the nerd gets the cheerleader, and they don't really do a great job of explaining anything.
