>>11708041>I'm not sure you will fully understand Russian works of art without living hereWhy would you say that is? I mean Russia is a big place, so the experiences of the different peoples in it wouldn't all be the same. Out of all that, there must be some peoples whose experiences are closer to mine, right?
>MiseryI did notice in it what you said about it being realistic, but maybe I don't fully understand the context. I do come from a place with lots of snow, however, so I think setting it in Winter was the perfect way to convey his loneliness. I liked how it didn't rely much on internal monologue, too. It conveyed with his attempts at speech, instead, which reinforced that loneliness.
Part of me wishes it was a bit longer so I could see more about the cab driver - that's how much it got me invested in such a short time - but at the same time, it did what it tried to well despite the short time frame.
>>11708062Admittedly, despite all the memes about how people should start with the Classics, I haven't read much beyond some of the Odyssey for school... Are they really as necessary as they say, in your opinion?
That last one seems very interesting, though I'm not usually one for esoteric stuff.
>>The Journey to the WestIt's definitely worth it on its own, and if you're familiar with its influence on things like anime, you'll appreciate the character interactions and fight scenes, as well, for how familiar they can be. But, as I said, it's different compared to Western literature. The style is unique - the fights, for example, are all done as poems - so it's worth it just to see the different way it does things too.
I'm reading Anthony C. Yu's translation, by the way, if you're unsure about which to choose.
>>flagUhh this's a Cosa Rican flag, and I'm not from here, anyway...
>>11708068>>HeimskringlaOh I've been meaning to read the Eddas when I can get around to it. How is that one?
>>11708070Impressive~!
