>>11725274>always wondered why the pennisula is part of Michigan instead of Wisconsinthe answer is a pretty hilarious and obscure part of history that few Americans outside of Michigan and Ohio know about. When these states first entered the Union in the mid 1800s there was a big territorial dispute over the city of Toledo (at the Northwestern corner of Ohio / southeastern border of Michigan) which at the time was very important for trade due to its access to the Maumee River. Both states claimed a strip of land including Toledo which led to a minor battle known as the "Toledo War" wherein a militia of 1,000 Michiganders went up against 600 Ohioans and were promptly expelled, with the only casualty being 1 Michigander wounded. Toledo was secured for Ohio and the Upper Peninsula was given to Michigan as a consolation prize so they wouldn't chimp out again.
