Has anyone here achieved a decent level in any language using duolingo? I’m colombian-american (parents from bogota, born in texas) and I’ve been learning Swedish since I have cousins that live in Stockholm and learned the language in a year. I feel like I’ve made good progress desu. How have you guys felt using it?

Language acquisition isn't like learning math, it's a subconscious process. If you want to learn a language to a fluent level, you need to focus on Input (Listening and Reading) as much as possible. So whether Duolingo is effective or not is completely dependent on how you use it.

Japanese duolingo actually has constant updates and support, it's not the best solution out there but it's good enough for basic vocab. I strongly suggest getting a textbook, though. I know people who have learned four or five languages and they almost exclusively use textbooks and interaction with natives.

Korean duolingo is just a mess. It's rarely updated and a lot of the voice lines have no audio iirc

Started 5 days ago, can say I'm already able to read a whole different alphabet and understand some basic sentences.

I love learning languages, really glad I tried it out. If you have a passion for it and do ~1-2h a day it'll become very easy to pick any language up.

JP is alright, helps you a lot getting the hang of Hiragana and Katakana and the like. Kanjis arent that great, I'd also recommend getting a textbook on it. ALSO speak to native speakers, it helps immensely with any language.

duolingo brings you too a A1 level atleast in the swedish course, maybe a2 if you really try hard
(just look up CEFR levels if you dunno what a1 or a2 means)

Focus on learning vocabulary first. Train yourself on an Anki deck of perhaps 2000 words. Then use Duolingo supplemented with a grammar guide. At some point, you may wish to switch over to actual books. The drawback of a book, is it you can't automatically convert new vocabulary into anki cards. The benefit being there are fewer distractions and you can't rely on your ability to copy-paste and google words and phrases you don't know as a crutch. I think your learning will accelerate the moment you can get away from a computer screen and read real books. It all depends on how much self-control and focus you around computers and the internet. For me, 90% of my time at a computer is spent engaging in mindless, non-beneficial activities.
