The slang term that refers to them is "tchum-tchá", which comes from to how the basic beat of the genre of music they listen to (brazilian funk) is almost always built off a person going "tchum-tchá".
It has no direct translation and no inherent relation to crime, but has always been a pejorative.
Being the ones I presume most likely to mug me, they scare me on the streets, but no kind of collective measure against them seems necessary, as none have actually even bothered me or anyone I closely know.
