The only conclusion I can come to is that it's so ingrained in their nature that they did it because they couldn't see a reason not to. America has been sold off, it's people enslaved by corporations, it's armies exhausted, and there was a man who was a symbol of hope, real or not, to millions worldwide and their instinct was to hurt it because it showed them what they could never be.
