You can and should practice kana, kanji, and grammar to build a base ability to understand/communicate, but from there the best way to get better is to just force yourself to use it. Change your OS language to Japanese; post on Japanese boards; play games on Japanese servers and only talk to people in Japanese; watch (unsubbed) Japanese V-tubers or other content with natural speech patterns. Work your way through the Genki textbooks or even Duolingo, sure, but if you really want to learn you have to graduate from studying to using/practicing in real and realistic contexts.
