I believe that consciousness is a byproduct of a function (or multiple functions, or maybe a byproduct of other stuff) meaning if the brainu is damaged enough then there is no consciousness and that person then acts purely through instincts and brain chemicals (maybe even through conditioned release of brain chemicals).
