>>12067275just different expectations to it all. dedicated language exchange stuff feels very pointed and direct, like you're being directly compared to others as worthwhile to speak to or not while having to make the same judgement of others on a single case basis since you're trying to establish a long term relationship with a single person. there's the added problem that it seems really easy to miss on common interests since all you can rely on is that you're interested in each other's language, which only really has overlap with each other's culture and "american/japanese culture" is an insanely broad topic
by meeting through something else it's just much more natural engagement overall. you've got minimum one common interest to talk about (in this case VR) that's far more likely to branch out into related interests (ie computers, video games), and it's more like a "real" meeting because you're just talking to whoever happens to be around and leaving if you don't like talking to them.
i guess i'd liken it to the difference between dating through tinder or trying to meet people through hobbies. the former certainly has it's place but it's quite cut throat and utilitarian, whereas the latter is drastically lower throughput but more comfortable and higher success rate
