>>12157819i guess i hadn't considered prostrate. idunno, maybe kowtow is more widely used than i'm giving it credit for but having never heard the term before in my life i have a hard time buying that it's just a regular ass loan word. seems to me that there's a specific enough sort of context that a translator would have to choose between putting it down as prostrate as a rough estimation or leave it as kowtow with the assumption that people watching chinese films know what it means.
in that way i'd probably liken it most to something like "senpai" where in most contexts you could just say upperclassmen and be mostly correct, but translators often choose to just leave it as senpai because people watching anime know what it means. that doesn't mean senpai is a loan word
yeah, but i'm saying the japanese word it comes from literally means "a little" in any context ie it's a little cold or i could use a little rest. skosh specifically means a pinch of something when cooking, so it's not really the same.
it has to do with the distance between the languages i'd imagine. i can pick up words here and there with spanish despite barely ever hearing it but i wouldn't be able to do that with chinese.
