If I drink booze I can finally numb it so much that I can live in the moment, I become excited about what other people are passionate in. I can give them my full attention instead of recessing into my own mind.
And if I smoke weed, which I don't do much, I can finally slow down the thoughts just enough that I can actually see them not for these motion-blur swipes across my minds eye. It's like having a superframerate camera and now I can see in detail the metamorphosis of my own trains of thought in all their splendor, and banality as the case may be...
