His nation and institutions carried him to success. There is a lot more to a nation than a figurehead, and he had all these absolutely brilliant marshalls like Davout and Berthier.
He went from a Corsican nationalist to a proud Frenchman, because he believed in the revolution and wanted to change the world. By the time he invaded Russia however, he obviously grew vainglorious and developed a god complex. When one keeps winning, and winning so hard, it is not good for one's psychology.
