>>12167556>How are you guys handling this ice storm? Thanks for asking!
We are handling it very well. We are in San Antonio, which I love for a multitude of reasons, not the least of which is it simply isn't disaster prone at all. Wildfires, earthquakes, floods, tornadoes, blizzards, etc. rarely if ever happen here while still being a beautiful part of the country (nothing beats the Hill Country for my money).
We aren't preppers, even though I like the idea of it, but I love me some fire, so we had 3/4 of a face cord of mesquite (plenty of seasoned firewood). Gas fireplace and heater but no gas range*. Enough food to last a week, plenty of water, running water, plenty of blankets, jackets, etc. and our house is very well insulated as is. All that being said we haven't had the need to go out for anything and our power only went out once this whole week and it was only for about six hours in the morning.
All in all the storm hasn't been an issue for us. It has made me realize we should be a little better prepared, we were somewhat lucky. All I did to prep was make sure our pipes, water heater and softener were wrapped. I thought we'd have a nice snow day and things would be back to normal on Tuesday. My wife and I are going to get an NG generator and other things in case anything else ever happens again.
Family in Houston area however, not doing so well. All were without power for at least a couple days, some had pipes burst, my grandmother's house had a pipe burst and caused the ceiling to cave in on her bathroom and closet. Luckily nobody was hurt and insurance has already approved it to be fixed sight unseen. Problem is getting anyone to come out and fix it anytime soon (Harris county is apparently devoid of plumbing materials).
*We're in the middle of redoing our kitchen and since gas is in the house this storm made us finally decide to go ahead and change to a gas range. I'll have to wait to redo the plumbing now though...
