In the 1700's-1800's already every family in southern Italy, even the poorest, had a "neapolitan coffee maker" (from which the modern moka was derived btw) in their house. I have one in my kitchen myself but I'm not entirely sure of how it's supposed to work, I believe it's from my grampa's house or smth.
The culture of coffee everywhere else in the world probably started a lot later as a way to cope with the modern consoomerist lifestyle, while we always consumed it just because we enjoy it.
