>>12217821From my perception we don't have any punks in America anymore. Punks were like the counter culture to counter culture. In a time when grunge and crust punks were big pop punks were like the counter culture of the counter culture. While traditional punks were focused on trying to take on the system and society the pop punks were filling their lyrics with deep topics of love, life and loss. Things that traditional punks didn't agree with because it didn't "fit the narrative" of anti-government and anti-society so in a way they became the thing they hated the most. Squares. Normies. Trying to tell us what you need to do to be punk. Punk was about being whatever the fuck you wanted and playing whatever you wanted even if nobody agreed with it.
In a way pop punk was the essence of punk. A true counter culture that stands even today.
