The Ak-47 has more manufacturers. Specifically Norinco (china) produces it in 7.62. Go ahead and try and find a Saiga 5.45 in the US. Tell me how your wallet feels. Also the round availability of 5.45 is pure shit. I have to order it online and it's all steel casing unreloadable bullshit. The US is running out of 7n6 so it's become better to just buy domestically made wolf/tula lacquered bullshit.
Trust me, I love my saiga 5.45. It was my first gun. I'd die holding it if it came down to it and when I'm home it's never more than 2 feet away from me but I understand why it's not popular.

I bought one in 5.45 a while back when they were about $450. Sold it for $1600 when NY passed the safe act since ammo was a pain to find anyway. Shame since it's a fun round to shoot.

This is a /k/ thread but OK.
The primary reason is that AKM users were given the tooling and training to build AKM's, and they have the factories to make AKM parts, magazines and ammunition. The cost of upgrading to a AK74, especially since the tooling and expertise will cost money simply isn't worth the cost.
