Also, are you talking about hypotheticals or are you talking about a real person?
In the past fathers would just teach their sons their professions, and the sons would take over the professions of their fathers or work with them. At least that's what usually would happen.
And that's why there are so many profession-based surnames.
That's what people in the past did with their sons.
