A good book to read if you're interested in psychology is Integral Psychology by Ken Wilber. He goes into why levels of human development are explanatory factors for much of human behaviour. Long story short, there are these levels:
Archaic, magic, mythic, rational, pluralistic, integral
Each of which transcends and includes the previous level. That is to say, the rational level can do anything the mythic level can do and something more - it can think for itself. The pluralistic level can do anything the rational level can do, and something more - it can care about the global ecological situation from a place of compassion for sentient life. The integral level can do that, as well as think in terms of these levels of development.
These levels grow up along lines of development, such as musical, cognitive, ethical, self, values, needs, kinaesthetic, etc. So you can be better at some things than you are at others. If you don't want to read all of Integral Psychology then read this short piece which will explain some of the things covered in the book.
