Why did YHVH require circumcision for the covenant? Wouldn't cutting off an earlobe or something be just as drastic & visible enough to show you were his people instead?

not certain (ive heard jews say it's for refinement of men and as a reminder to "circumcise the heart") but it was ordered to be done on the 8th day after a male baby was born and it was literally just a part of the tip (study the history of the proceeding)

the 8th day is important because it's the day the baby has the highest regenerative ability i believe
