>i tell him im not worried
>he insists on the stop loss anyways and hovers over me while the coin crashes from $8 to $4.80
>he tells me i should've set the stop loss
>the coin immediately jumps back to >$5
>he walks away
>few weeks later coin is now $15
>run into my dads room and yell at him to never tell me to set a stop loss again
Am i the asshole here bros?

That's because he is using "stop loss" the wrong way. Generally "Stop Loss" is meant to be used while you are still there watching and mainly if you have immediate sale ability on your account. If you use stoploss and walk away for a week, that is basically the same as "Buy High, Sell Low" strategy.

Stop Loss is useful for day traders who spend all day watching and trading stocks. in such a case, it protects them from oversight or forgetting about a stock due to something else eating up their attention span. When done with the trading session, they will remove the stop loss.

For issues that constantly have big swings in value, setting stop loss very often results in buy high, sell low. Unless you set the stoploss well above the price that you first bought the item.

Another use of stop loss is when you know the entry point of your initial purchase of that stock. If you set the stop loss at the value, then you don't have a capital gains tax if that stock is automatically dumped.

Remember that sales aren't necessarily at the price you expect. Your stoploss sale will probably be at whatever settling price the broker gives you. However, the broker has many recourses to maximize THEIR profit at your expense. Depending on their expectation of the settling price, the broker may instead settle the trade from in-house stock buy/sell orders which they have in possession. The delta is then their additional profit.
