I learned C on my own because I knew I was gonna have to take a class on it later on, so I got started on it during winter break and kept on learning more of it while taking the class related to it.
C is a subset of C++, so there's no problem with adding pieces of pure C code into a C++ program. It works for programs that make basic tasks too, so even if it's not really something that'll get people hired on its own, it's good as a stepping stone.
