I imagine that people probably knew where animals gathered around or often passed through, so they could probably make extremely rudimentary traps, like standing behind a bush and imitating an animal's call.
I'm not sure if they had ropes all the way back then, much less cages or springs.
But in any case, they'd probably just have to wait there for several hours till an animal comes by and they're able to kill it.
