I once saw a demons face doing this, but it was by accident because I was trying to sleep. I was nowhere near sleep, but it's face would vividly torment me whenever I shut my eyes with a nasty grin. It scared me at first, but finally I called on the Lord and in the name of Jesus Christ I rebuked the demon and asked the Lord that He may put a protective seal on the area and over me. Before it took on a humanoid form, it looked like a pitch black mist. I didn't show it fear when I saw it because I know some entities feed on it. It stared at me for like a minute and it tried to touch my forehead. Then I called out to God to help me because at the time, I wasn't sure what it was exactly and it froze in place.
I was in my bed at the time and I was trying to fall asleep, but I didn't try to move because I wanted it to think that I was asleep. I thought it would go away if it thougt that I was sleeping.

Its head was very round, almost spherical, and its skin was very shiny, almost like plastic, and the color of a light brown. I do believe that demons can take on different forms, so that may have been a face it understood would bring me fear to torment me, I don't know.
Definitely spend time praying, I believe connecting with God (the Light and the Good) will help you. My dad told me he would be followed by shadow people often before I was born, during that time he was living a very dark life, disconnected from God.
If the shadows aren't tied to you, they may be tied to an area you are frequently in, pray to the Lord and ask for protection over areas you frequent and over your earthly vessel.

Hard to say what it was doing exactly but they like to hang around sleeping people. Those people usually have bad nightmares when they're around. On the other hand when they touch people it can be to possess them. When that happens the person they touch will convulse. I have known of people plagued by these things waking up and telling their loved ones they plan to kill them and other negative things but they have no memory of getting out of bed much less what they said.

This always works against them. The only evil entities I've ever heard of it failing on by credible witnesses are fallen angels who, being living, seem undisturbed by it. If you encounter one of those I'd caution you to flee if you can lest it kill you. I bring this up in case your demonic encounter wasn't by chance. They do target some people and families.

The difference is between the living and the dead. Fallen Angels are functionally immortal but can be killed. Nephilim exist and died as well can be demons and may constitute at least some of the dark black entities as they have been witnessed vomiting salt water. I had one man who owned a German Shepard tell me that his dog would get skittish around the house at certain times and places. During one of these instances he was walking through a threshold and did not notice one of the black humanoids crouching along the wall on all fours until his dog became defensive, at that point the entity vomited salt water all over him which he confirmed by the smell of it and many of his family members witnessed it on him shortly thereafter. Within moments in fact.

I would say they are stronger and more capable than demons in my experience. Fallen angels exhibit all the powers attributed to them in the bible whereas demons seem to be lacking some of these attributes. They could be holding back or it may be that many demons are nephilim and therefore not as powerful as full angels in life or thereafter. You must remember all the things angels did and were capable of in the bible such as being around without you being able to perceive them with the intent to kill you such as happened to Balaam. The ability to enter dreams and predict the future, so on and so forth. I witnessed the aftermath of one attack but I'm running out of room here so hopefully I was clear enough in my answer.

I can't see the shadows directly, only out of the corner of my eye, but that's enough to know they're there. Often I will glimpse a small shadow that I mistake as my dog and a shadow that's about average male height that I will mistake as my husband, and they will sit in my peripheral vision for as long as I don't look over at them directly. I have even "spoken" to them mistakenly, such as greeting the human shaped one as my husband before looking over and seeing nothing there. I have prayed, but I live in an apartment complex with people who live lives that seek to invite demons in (hard drugs and such) directly surrounding my unit, so it seems to be ineffective. Thankfully, I should be moving soon.

From what I understand fallen angels count as demons and are the devils minions even if technically stronger than other demons. If God is protecting you they have no real power over you. Everyone but Noah and his family got punished for ignoring God, any fallen angels included were punished too. Unless you're a nonbeliever you have no reason to worry too much about how strong fallen angels can be.

Be aware for your own sake that they can perfectly mimic the living and the dead. They can take and maintain their shape and replicate their voice. Angels yes. They can be indistinguishable from us and even put you to the test if they're good. There's a long tradition of being charitable to strangers and travelers because you never know if someone is a messenger of God. It can and does happen. In one family I knew there was demonic activity spanning at least three generations with the black entities being present for the duration. They seem to be drawn to trauma and negative emotions. Moreover I believe they seek to spread trauma across individuals and generations. For example, say a man was abused and shortly thereafter he begins to see the black entities. He then grows up and inflicts the same abuse on his children all while the entities are present. I believe the black entities act to amplify negativity so as to inflict and perpetuate harm so as to darken the world with sorrow.

The only way out is with Christ. These things are old and crafty, very deft at manipulating emotions and human frailty. Because of this people tend to focus on the wrongs inflicted on them but forgiveness as instructed by Christ sets you free from the cycle.

I won't nitpick over categorization as I don't believe it will edify anyone. You can place them as you please. My only point is noting the differences in their scopes of activity as I and others have witnessed so as to be better able to deal with them. I will add to this part of your post 1 thing: whatever the case may be we are not allowed the luxury of being fearful of anything save for God Himself. There are stories of preachers being assailed by fallen angels as well. Whether you want to believe that or ascribe it to their own fault is up to you. For my part I won't lose my faith if rebuking a fallen angel in God's name fails as I've known of Godly people falling victim to just such circumstances.
