>>12444727well the situation was that several times in my chemistry 101 class we were tasked with reading a single article on a vaguely science related political proposition and responding to it. the professor clearly expected us to just read the article and post "wow he's right! big corporations are bad and recycling is good so we should force private companies to invest in recycling infrastructure." which is some truly indoctrination type shit.
i didn't even necessarily disagree with the articles, but i was so disgusted by the way the professor was presenting it that for every post i'd spend hours constructing a reasonable counterargument. in one case the article was basically purporting that the only way to get people to recycle their bottles was by passing laws that force companies to buy empty bottles back from the consumers. again i don't necessarily disagree, but in order to argue the other side i pointed at how japan handles these things.
over there basically every day is trash day but they only pick up very specific categories of garbage on each day. you're forced to use small, clear trash bags so that the garbagemen can see what's in them. if you've got anything that isn't supposed to be picked up on that day in the bag, they put a big ass sign on it that says "THIS IDIOT CAN'T SORT THEIR TRASH LOL" and don't take it. so in the end everyone in japan recycles as much as possible because if they don't their trash literally won't be picked up and they'll be publicly shamed.
