A new German letter is confirmed. The capital letter sharp s gets mandantory in ID cards, book titles, captions and other places, where double S had been used as an ersatz before. Discuss!

but it helps to keep words like BUẞE (penance) and BUSSE (buses), IN MAẞEN (moderate) and IN MASSEN (massive) or SCHOẞ (lap [body part]) and SCHOSS ([he] shot) apart.

New? I had to send some shit to a buyer in some German speaking country (ebay, I don't remember where the buyer was) and I used a capital ẞ when I wrote STRAẞE on the thing. Was that considered "wrong" at the time?

The letter ß was lower-case only before, because there is no word, which starts with ß. Before the new orthography rule, ß was capitalized as SS, so the words "Masse" (mass) and "Maße" (measures) both turned into "MASSE". This also caused problems at custom controls, because this also affected names in passports.

Capital ẞ never was wrong, it has been in Unicode since 2008, but there was no orthography rule, which made use of the letter obligatory, even though the capital form had some use in logos, street signs and book titles. Traditionally, SS was the uppercase mapping for ß. Now, ẞ is the official spelling.

I always thought ß is supposed to be both lowercase and uppercase at the same time.
If I had to write Straße in all upper-case, I would write it as STRAßE.
Yeah it looks a bit weird when typed, but when you handwrite it, it literally wouldn't make a difference.
But yeah of course it's easier to re-print every official document and create a new keyboard layout, than to just say "ß" is upper-case too. Those ortography people need to get their shit together.

There was once an ortographical reform here in Poland, one of the things they changed was to change every 'ó' to 'u' (nowadays it's both the same letter) except things that in some form has 'o' in the 'ó' place. Fuckers forgot about few of the words and now Poles have to learn by hard words that are "exceptions"
