>>12473701In this Ayah, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala states,
إِنَّ اللَّهَ لاَ يَغْفِرُ أَن يُشْرَكَ
“Indeed, Allah does not forgive that a partner is associated with Him…”
meaning, He does not forgive a servant if he meets Him while he is associating partners with Him. Shirk also includes depending on others rather than Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, associating our happiness and success with mortal beings rather than the One who provides everything.
وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَلِكَ
“….but He forgives other than that…”
meaning He forgives every other sin,
لِمَن يَشَآءُ
“…for whom He wills.”
In the beginning of the ayah there was a warning that He does not forgive association of partners to Him, but He forgives other sins. Now a condition has been put “for whom He wills”. So no one should assume that if they are not doing shirk Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala will forgive them. His mercy is vast, but one has to qualify to receive His mercy.

If you question them, they will certainly say, “We were only talking idly and joking around.” Say, “Was it Allah, His revelations, and His Messenger that you ridiculed?”
Make no excuses! You have lost faith after your belief. If We pardon a group of you,1 We will punish others for their wickedness.
The hypocrites, both men and women, are all alike: they encourage what is evil, forbid what is good, and withhold ˹what is in˺ their hands. They neglected Allah, so He neglected them. Surely the hypocrites are the rebellious.
[Al-Tawbah 65-67]
So let them indulge ˹in falsehood˺ and amuse ˹themselves˺ until they face their Day, which they have been threatened with—
the Day they will come forth from the graves swiftly, as if racing to an idol ˹for a blessing˺,1
with eyes downcast, utterly covered with disgrace. That is the Day they have ˹always˺ been warned of.
