>>12526141Holy fucking shit, this. That takes me the fuck back! My mother had a Be-Ro cook book for baking, so that'd be cakes, pastries, buns, bread and that kind of thing. That was another thing working class families had a lot of, mothers would cook that stuff en mass, there would always be hot cross buns.
Pic related is fairly sure what we had. I tell you what is fucking good is the nutty flapjacks made with golden syrup because they'd come out relatively soft and were sweet as hell. My mother always had racks of cakes and stuff like that cooling all the time. I think that's another working class thing.
>>12526143Yeah it needs to be pitted in contrast against some kind of hardship, cold weather, hard work, it makes me want to go and live in a log cabin in the frozen woods for a month just so I can better enjoy a god damn basic stew.
>>12526144It's possible she was just bad at preparing it, but yes in some sense I acknowledge what makes this kind of food good was its service in feeding hard working class people. What's good in a high end resturant with tiny portions and expensive budget is different to 4000 calories on a shoestring budget.
God if you've ever had chips deep fat fried in lard though, holy fuck, best chips ever. In fact last time I had that was at the heart attack grill when i visited Vegas in the US. Good times.
