I had a Civil War ancestor who was also a bit of a cheeky bastard. He was walking down a road when a Confederate patrol came by. They told him he was being conscripted and to come with them.
He asked if he could at least go home to pack and say goodbye to his family. They said yes, but he would have to join up with the first unit he saw.
So he went home, packed and said goodbye to his family and started walking again, and bumped into a Union patrol. He said "I'm a man of my word, I'm going to join the first unit I came across" and fought for the Union.
