I go to reddit, see hundreds of thousands of subreddits spanning popular to obscure topics, with some interesting discussion in the comment section from people knowledgeable about the topics in question.

I go to 4chan and every topic, regardless of what it is eventually and inevitably devolves into everyone calling each other faggots. Rarely is there any actual discussion on 4chan or any of it's boards, which is not the way it used to be.

Depends on what boards you go to. I'm under the impression the slower the board the higher the quality tends to be. /diy/ for example is slow as fuck, but i had quality discussions that lasted for days. Mostly telling anons why X is a stupid idea, but the vast majority of replies were polite and legit.

Check out /analyticphilosophy, /puremath, any of the truly specialised subs. Dead as fuck. /foodforthought and /depthhub? One post with anyone commenting, and it's a shadow of its former self.

The site's been dying since 2012, when the front page became image dominant - but the semblance of life from the popular subs hides this fact.

And intelligent discussion on the popular subs? Shadow of its former self, usually just fakers using rhetorical tricks and getting away with it because either the actual experts have left or if they do so happen to spot the charlatanism, they don't use rhetorical tricks that entertain the audience when correcting the horseshit.

I think I've been on reddit a total of 3 times and I never dug in deep enough to see why people bitch. I've been coming to 4chan since 2006 (lying newfag, i know) and from what I've heard on this site, they apparently steal content from us and recycle it. At the same time I'm also reading that we've received a huge influx of users from reddit. 4chan has noticeably been getting shittier and lazier with it's "original content" to the point where it seems like we're the ones now recycling our own memes (I'll explain more next paragraph). I'm really beginning to wonder if this is because of reddit or if this is because the internet is now in the hands of the iPhone generation and in reality, we're truly no different than reddit in terms of cringiness these days.

As for recycling our own memes, I first want to say that what characteristics classify a "meme" to us has apparently changed and also the overall attitude towards them. In the old days, there weren't kids running around screaming, "lol meme! i love memes! im a memer!" Memes were more obscure and people didn't ask to collect memes and stupid shit like that. Memes just got posted, that's it. They were little inside jokes, not some "show me ur best meme XD!" social share. This gave them more originality, because people weren't constantly picking up every single funny sounding quote, every single cartoon character, etc and attempting to turn them into a meme. The primary example I have of this is Pepe, that godawful frog. Pepe was pretty cool when it first came around, it was the first ever "collectors meme". As we saw when /bant/ was first created though, the lazy memer kids went straight to work and created 3 Pepe spinoffs that were the exact same "collectors meme" format like Pepe (Blepe, Simon, Borche).

Sorry, I've been up for 36 hours and I'm exhausted. TL:DR - People are lazy everywhere these days.

Reddit is genuinely good if you go there for very niche things or in niche boards. An example would be for making maps or writing a novel. /tg/ can help with the first and /lit/ can call you shit on the second but it won't compare to dedicated subs in reddit.

That said, if you go to reddit and use their popular boards such as /r/gaming and anything political you're a faggot and should stay there.
