>>12619253well in her defense the point is that they're difficult questions to answer. not like most of the others did any better, they just tried a bit longer before giving up.
she definitely was talking about kanji but presumably she meant she's not very good with kanji as apposed to she can't read any. the short version is that kanji is it's own curriculum that needs to be drilled and it goes through to the end of high school. as such, anything that needs to be accessible to anyone below 18ish includes little characters above any less kanji to tell you how to read it
so unless she's literally retarded it's not like she's saying she's straight up illiterate, more like compared to her peers she's a slow reader
yeah, they definitely picked words that were intentionally challenging. i'd say if they weren't given specific prompts and just asked to hold a conversation without any loanwords people would struggle more to remember what words to talk around than to actually talk around them
the problem they run into with that i think is that traditional inns still exist in japan as something entirely different. as such inn doesn't sound like "that old word for hotel" in their mind, it sounds like a totally separate, distinct thing. of course something like "modern inn" would get the point across but since hotels just sprung up alongside inns at some point it's not so obvious to remember they're basically the same.
it'd be like trying to think of describing a fast food place as a shitty diner. not nearly impossible, but could definitely be difficult on the spot. i suspect several people did exactly that though considering the same few groups showed up again and again despite many more people obviously being interviewed.
