Because if you do not believe it, you won't do it. Just like how you won't try the parachute if you do not believe it will open and save your life. From belief flows everything. It is the reason the leap of faith comes before knowledge. You believe your light will turn on in your room, so you flip the switch. If you believe it won't, you will not flip the switch.

We live in such days that even if you know the parachute is your only thing saving you, you will not open it just because you are tired and you are also aware that some paratroopers who were confident in their parachutes landed in lava pools anyway. Plus our parachute has such a delay that it makes some paratroopers rather slit their throats before they even land.

Well, why do we need to believe in Jesus to repent? It just seems so arbitrary and nonsensical to me that if people don't believe yet are repentant, they will still be damned.

I just don't believe it :( If someone could give a rational justification for how the state of our soul is changed by believing in Jesus, and why we can't achieve that same state without him, I can't be a Christian, as much as I agree with the moral code and ethic.

Truly I think Christ is the Way. But the salvation by faith part is just bizarre

Well if it was easy everyone would do it. There is no hidden knowledge that someone can bestow unto you so you will suddenly "get it." I would suggest you stop looking for that entirely. Try actually looking for Jesus instead. Good luck anyway.

I have been on my way back to the church but just had a crisis and lost all my faith because of this doctrine that only faith saves us. If I understood it then I think maybe what little faith I had would come back

Put all of your faith in Jesus, that he died on the cross for all of your sins, past and future, and you will be saved and have everlasting life, meaning you cannot lose it. It's a free gift of God! No work required, just faith! If you sinned after you are saved, God will punish you, but you will go to heaven.

You are asking for something that is not possible. Like I said, there is nothing to know that will save you. There is something to believe that will save you. There is no puzzle to be out together. Just lots of folks telling you what god told them. You have to choose to believe it, and then you will find out wether or not it's true.

The light switch again. Your lights are broken so you call a guy to repair them while you are at work. You come home and see a note "The lights are working." you then choose to believe the repair man fixed the lights, because the he said he did. And you switch them on. The lights come on and now you know. Had you not believed the repairman was there to fix them, you would not believe flipping the switch would do anything, and the knowledge of wether or not the lights were fixed would not be bestowed upon you.
