Goes back to England and Ireland being old enemies. Doesn't help that Irish people really are sort of belligerent in real life or at least all the ones I've met were. I don't think that alone should earn them the hatred they have by any means though.

the way i've heard it is that the irish (and other discriminated classes like poles and italians, etc.) were considered "white" scientifically—insofar as race is to be considered scientific—but culturally signified as subhuman. this is largely due in part to their catholicism, which americans back then, and to some extent even today albeit unknowingly, were vehemently antagonistic towards.

by 'people' do you mean the kkk? I haven't looked into this in depth and I claim no expertise but from what I've seen pre-KKK references to the crann tara or bidding stick describe it as a wooden pole, not specifically a cross. even if it was a cross it could possibly have been an X shape rather than a Christian cross. I don't claim any authority, I just don't trust the Satanist Albert Pike's Masonic terrorist organisation to be a faithful representer of Scottish Gaelic customs

I don't see any reason to trust romanticised images from the late nineteenth century as evidence of anything whatseover. that's not to say that the gathering beam or balefire or beacon (given as alternative definitions to fiery cross in the Gaelic dictionary) wasn't shaped like a cross, I just haven't seen any firm evidence it was except on very second hand sources. it's very weird for a pious Christian people, even a superstitious and arguably semi-pagan one like the highlanders, to burn a cross as a rallying gesture. it has Satanic vibes
